Who Is Who
Defendants and the jewels
The crimes, human rights violations and destruction of nature caused by companies occur because there are decisions by individuals who direct and command corporate actions in the territories, or who omit themselves when they should act to prevent damage and harm to individuals and society. It is necessary for these people to be known, which is why we have listed here the names and surnames of the defendants in the criminal proceedings over the tragedy in Brumadinho. Among other things, they took the decision to hide the information that the dam was at risk, which caused the early and violent death of 272 victims: workers from the mining company and contractors, tourists and local residents. These defendants were charged by the Public Prosecutor’s Office after a dedicated investigation and have the right to defend themselves against the accusations during the criminal proceedings. The disclosure of their names is based on Resolution 121 of the National Council of Justice, which authorizes the disclosure of basic data from electronic proceedings on the World Wide Web.
The jewels are the 272 fatal victims of the collapse of the tailings dam at Córrego do Feijão. The former president of Vale, Fabio Schvartsman, argued during a hearing in the National Congress that the company could not be held responsible for a tragedy with one of its dams, because it was a “Brazilian jewel”. This speech sparked outrage among the victims’ relatives, who began to call them Jewels.
