Processes Brazil
In February 2020, a criminal lawsuit was filed over the Brumadinho tragedy, when the Minas Gerais Public Prosecutor’s Office received the complaint, charging the defendants with double-murder, 270 times, and various offenses under the environmental crimes law. Since then, the Observatory has been following the proceedings of this case step by step, which, in 2023, was restarted in the Federal Court and split into three cases. In this section, some carefully selected procedural acts are summarized and made available in full, so that victims’ families and society can understand how the criminal proceedings are progressing.
This timeline is updated with each relevant advance in the processes.
All the documents and information made available here are public and are disclosed in order to provide transparency and guarantee the right of access to information (article 5o , XXXIII and XXXIV,b of the Constitution), and to enforce the principle of publicity of procedural acts (article 93, IX, of the Constitution). After all, “these are crimes that affect a plurality of individual and collective legal assets, and it is in society’s interest to monitor every step of the criminal prosecution and the decisions made in it” (Oliveiros Guanais de Aguiar Filho, Regional Prosecutor of the Republic, in habeas corpus 1003640-82.2023.4.06.0000, Federal Regional Court of the 6a Region).
